Safety Notes Read on October 23, 2026

  • Harry Griffen Regional Park: “Nature Trails (Except North Loop) are closed during Helix Water District construction from September 21 through November 20.” The page showed no year.
  • El Capitan Reservoir (City of San Diego): closed the first Friday of each month; boat ramp closed for low water. San Vicente Reservoir (City of San Diego): closed the second Friday of each month. Lake Murray (City of San Diego): closed the second Tuesday of each month, with an undated water-level notice.
  • El Capitan County Preserve: closed in August for extreme heat; strenuous with very little shade.
  • Cleveland National Forest: Fire Danger “High” and Forest Order 02-26-10, which limits campfires, charcoal and smoking, through December 31, 2026. At Desert View the site page and the forest order conflict about fires; see also Pioneer Mail.
  • Lake Jennings is a drinking-water reservoir: no bodily contact with the water. Hollenbeck Canyon allows upland bird hunting.
  • Walker Preserve: the City of Santee warns that rattlesnakes, poison oak and coyotes can be found on its trails.

Which Government Runs What

Several places people call “East County” are run by the City of San Diego: Lake Murray, El Capitan Reservoir, San Vicente Reservoir and the Mission Trails Visitor Center. The County runs Lindo Lake, Stelzer Park and Spring Valley Park. The lakes are for fishing; none allows swimming.

What We Could Not Verify

  • Our town list is our own grouping of El Cajon, La Mesa, Santee, Lakeside and Alpine, with Lemon Grove, Spring Valley and Jamul only where a place had a primary page. These are not official boundaries.
  • The City of El Cajon website blocked our automatic reader, so its pages (Wells Park, HauntFest, America on Main Street, Knox House) were read by hand on October 23, 2026. The city says HauntFest 2026 is canceled and no America on Main Street is planned for 2026, so neither is listed as upcoming.
  • Lake Murray Community Park is a City of San Diego park, not a City of La Mesa park. Its address differs between two city listings (7051 and 7003 Murray Park Drive), its own page returned an error and we read no facts from it, so it is not listed.
  • Not researched or no primary page read: the Helix Water Tower area, Granite Hills, a Fletcher Hills park, Santee Drive-In and Swap Meet, Anderson Park in Alpine and Sunrise Scenic. Jamul has no County library or park page; only Hollenbeck Canyon was confirmed.
  • Tribal-land venues are left out. The Cleveland National Forest picnic sites are in the Laguna Mountains, well east of Alpine town.
  • Santee Lakes address, Lake Jennings clock hours, reservoir water levels, Exhibit A fire sites and several fees are named as not confirmed on their own pages.
