Part of Downtown, Balboa Park & Central, our guide to downtown San Diego, Balboa Park and the central neighborhoods.
Free general admission rotates by museum: mostly the first to fourth Tuesdays, plus the second Thursday for the Model Railroad Museum. It is for City and County of San Diego residents and active military and dependents, with photo ID showing an address. The Zoo is not part of it.Checked October 22, 2026.

How It Works
balboapark.org says museums offer free general admission “on a rotating basis” to residents of the City and County of San Diego, and to active military and their dependents. Bring photo ID with your address. Special exhibitions and some films are not included. On the fifth Tuesday of a month, regular prices apply. The Mingei makes its third Tuesday free for everyone, with no ID.
Other Ways to Save
The Botanical Building, Alcazar Garden and Sunday organ concerts are always free. The Natural History Museum and the Zoo have their own October 2026 kids-free offers; see their pages.
What We Could Not Verify
- Dates: we list the rule for each museum, not a calendar. Check each museum’s own page for the exact day and any closure.
- Explorer Pass prices were not read.
- A Museum Council page lists a Kids Free October program that we did not open; we rely on each museum’s own page.

FAQ
Are the Zoo and San Diego History Center on the free days?
The Zoo is not on the balboapark.org list. We could not read the History Center’s page, so we do not say.
