Part of Downtown, Balboa Park & Central, our guide to downtown San Diego, Balboa Park and the central neighborhoods.
Balboa Park is open 24 hours a day and has no gates or entry fee. Each museum sets its own hours and prices. A free tram runs daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Parking in the Cultural District lots is paid from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.Checked October 22, 2026.

Free Things to Do
The Botanical Building and Lily Pond, Alcazar Garden and the Sunday organ concerts are free. balboapark.org also lists free lawn programs at the House of Pacific Relations on weekends and summer Twilight in the Park concerts at the Organ Pavilion. Museums charge their own prices; see Balboa Park Free Days for the rotating resident schedule.
Free Walking Tours
balboapark.org says the general tour leaves the Visitors Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m., lasts 60 to 75 minutes, needs no registration and suggests a $5 donation. An older City page lists a different schedule, so we follow the park’s own page.
How The Park Began
The City says 1,400 acres were set aside on May 26, 1868 and the state ratified it on February 4, 1870. In 1892 Kate Sessions offered to plant 100 trees a year in return for park land. The park was renamed Balboa Park in 1910. Most buildings along El Prado date from the 1915–16 Panama-California Exposition; the Pan American Plaza area grew out of the 1935–36 California Pacific International Exposition. The National Park Service list of National Historic Landmarks shows “Balboa Park” designated December 22, 1977.
What We Could Not Verify
- Size: balboapark.org says 1,200 acres; the City of San Diego says more than 1,000 acres. We show both.
- Museum count: balboapark.org says 17 museums and cultural institutions; the City says 15. We say “more than a dozen.”
- Parking: balboapark.org (page dated August 27, 2026) says the City Council approved a settlement to end paid parking on January 1, 2027, with paid parking continuing through the end of 2026. We found this only on balboapark.org, not on a City page. Check before you go.
- National Historic Landmark: the National Park Service list prints the entry as “Balboa Park” without the word “district,” so we do not call it a district.
- Tour schedule: balboapark.org and an older City page disagree; we follow balboapark.org.
- Park rules on bikes and scooters, and the Explorer Pass prices, were not read.
