Dogs on San Diego Beaches

Part of San Diego Beaches, our guide to San Diego beaches, coast and safety rules.

Dog Beach in Ocean Beach and Fiesta Island in Mission Bay are the City’s leash-free dog areas. Other beach rules differ by City page and conflict with each other. Individual pages for Mission Beach, Pacific Beach and La Jolla say no dogs. Check the beach’s own page before you go.Checked October 23, 2026.

City Page 1: Beaches and Bays

The City Beaches and Bays page says dogs are allowed on San Diego beaches after 6 p.m. from April 1 to October 31, and that Dog Beach and Fiesta Island are all-day leash-free areas.

City Page 2: Beach Regulations

The City Beach Regulations page says that from November 1 to March 31, dogs are not allowed on the beach, boardwalk or adjacent parks from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

City Page 3: Individual Beaches

The individual City pages for Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, North Pacific Beach, La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Cove each say no dogs.

The Conflict

These City pages do not agree. The Beaches and Bays page implies evening dogs on beaches in summer, while the individual beach pages say no dogs. Treat dog hours as check the beach’s own page, and confirm with the City of San Diego Lifeguards before bringing a dog.

What We Could Not Verify

  • Which dog rule applies at each beach is not confirmed because the City pages conflict. The City of San Diego can confirm at 619-221-8899.
  • Dog Beach address, parking and restrooms are not confirmed.
  • Coronado Dog Beach rules appear only in a search result and are not confirmed.
  • Silver Strand lists no dogs on the beach but also mentions leashed dogs on bayside paths.
