Part of San Diego Beaches, our guide to San Diego beaches, coast and safety rules.
La Jolla Shores is a City beach with a permanent lifeguard station. The City lists no dogs, no alcohol and no smoking, plus fire pits, parking, restrooms, showers and beach wheelchairs. The Matlahuayl no-take marine reserve and a second protected area lie just to the north, so fishing rules change.Checked October 23, 2026.

The Beach
The City lists La Jolla Shores with a permanent lifeguard station and the standard beach restrictions. Details such as hours and parking are not on the City page.
Reserves North of Shores
The Matlahuayl reserve allows no take of any kind, and the Scripps Coastal area allows only limited hook-and-line take of certain bait fish. See Marine Protected Areas before you bring fishing gear.
What We Could Not Verify
- Address, hours, parking details and snorkeling rules are not confirmed.
- How the reserve boundaries relate to the Shores swimming area is not confirmed. Check the California Department of Fish and Wildlife maps.
