Part of Coronado & South Bay, our guide to Coronado, the South Bay and the bayfront.
Coronado Beach is a wide sandy beach about 1.75 miles long, with Navy beaches at both ends. Lifeguards work year-round from the station at Central Beach, and the main tower is staffed daily from 9 a.m. to sunset. Alcohol, glass and smoking are not allowed.Checked October 23, 2026.
Warning Flags
The City uses these flags: green is low hazard, yellow is medium hazard, red is high hazard, double red means the water is closed, purple means marine dangers such as stingrays or jellyfish, yellow with a black circle means swimming only, and a black and white checkered flag means surfing only.
Beach Fires
Fires are allowed only inside a fire ring. Burn clean wood only, no pallets, put the fire out when you leave and do not dump coals in the sand. Wood fires are not allowed on South Beach.
The SS Monte Carlo
The City’s lifeguard page tells the story of the SS Monte Carlo, a famous shipwreck buried on Coronado Beach, and links a fact sheet.
Beach Day With Kids
The City tells parents that children need constant supervision, to pick a landmark such as a lifeguard tower as a meeting point, and to remind children that lifeguards are “safe strangers.” It also advises against digging large holes or tunnels because sand can collapse. For the full rules on Coronado and the Silver Strand, see Coronado and Silver Strand.
What We Could Not Verify
- The City’s two pages word the Glorietta Bay lifeguard season differently (one gives daily hours from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend, the other says weekends until Labor Day weekend). We show the first and say so.
- Parking details, restroom hours and the Beach Guide map were not read.
- For water quality and closures, use the San Diego County beach information site; we did not read it today.
