Part of Fishing in San Diego, our guide to fishing, long-range sportfishing and whale watching in San Diego.
Three Point Loma landings sell overnight to multi-day trips. Landings describe three long-range tiers: 4 to 6 days, 8 to 12 days and 16 to 23 days. Anyone 16 or older needs a California license. Posted short trips on October 22, 2026 ran from $315.67 (overnight) to $1,495.57 (3 day).Checked October 23, 2026.

Our Pick: Red Rooster III
Our pick. When we point readers to a long-range boat out of Point Loma, it is the Red Rooster III, a 105-foot boat that sails from H&M Landing and sleeps 30. That preference is the site’s own opinion, not an endorsement from the landing.
The Three Long-Range Tiers
Fisherman’s Landing and Point Loma Sportfishing both describe the same three tiers on their long range pages. Each is the operator’s own description, and trip dates, boats and routes change by season.
- 4 to 6 days: Guadalupe, San Benitos and Cedros Islands. Fisherman’s Landing says spring trips there fish for yellowtail and calico bass, while albacore and tuna dominate summer and fall.
- 8 to 12 days: Alijos Rocks and “The Ridge,” from Pt. Eugenia south to Thetis Bank. Fisherman’s Landing places these in fall and early summer and lists tuna, wahoo, yellowtail, dorado, grouper and the occasional marlin.
- 16 to 23 days: the Revillagigedo Islands and Clipperton, mainly winter and spring, for yellowfin and wahoo.
Fisherman’s Landing says these trips often go more than 1,000 miles south into Mexican waters and describes staterooms and gourmet meals. Boat specifications and prices for the 4 to 23 day tiers are not posted on the long range pages we read.
Shorter and Mid-Length Trips
Short and mid-length trips sit below the long-range tiers. Point Loma Sportfishing lists full day, overnight, half day AM and PM, lobster, and 1.5, 2 and 2.5 day trips, with multi-day trips “from 3 to 23 days.” H&M Landing’s Trip Finder lists half day, full day, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 5 and 5.5 day trips and says it sells complete packages from 2 to 21 days. Fisherman’s Landing lists half day, full day, multi-day, open party, private charter and long range.

Seasons and Species
Seasons here are operator statements, not guarantees. The landings describe yellowtail and calico bass near the islands in spring, albacore and tuna in summer and fall, and yellowfin and wahoo on far-south winter trips. Bluefin tuna, dorado, albacore and lingcod seasons from the operators were not confirmed. CDFW says tunas are open year-round in the Southern California limits table.
The Point Loma Sportfishing fish count on October 22, 2026 showed San Diego dock totals as of 7 pm of 614 yellowfin tuna, 100 calico bass released, 70 spiny lobster, 58 calico bass, 38 sand bass, 20 wahoo, 7 yellowtail and 1 dorado. Its New Lo-An 3 day trip with 17 anglers landed 180 yellowfin, 3 wahoo and 2 yellowtail. H&M Landing’s site reported the Ocean Odyssey on a 2.5 day trip with 4 wahoo and 60+ yellowfin on October 21, and Fisherman’s Landing’s report for an 8 day Excel trip said the fishing was excellent, with no numbers.
What to Expect Aboard
Point Loma Sportfishing says its long-range boats are Coast Guard approved and carry scanning sonar, ship-to-shore radios, GPS and radar, and that prices include food, bait and customs clearances. Fisherman’s Landing says bait is included on half-day trips and many offshore trips, and meals on many multi-day trips. For overnight and multi-day trips, H&M Landing recommends a rod belt, sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, bedding (sleeping bag and pillow), a valid photo ID and cash for services.
Fisherman’s Landing recommends seasickness medicine even for first-timers and sells Bonine at its tackle shop. It allows you to bring your own food but says coolers of any kind are not allowed aboard; boats sell meals and drinks.
Boarding, Booking and Parking
H&M Landing books through its trip calendar and Trip Finder, and says dockside fish processing must be reserved when you book. Point Loma Sportfishing books by phone or online and asks for a 50% deposit on long range. Fisherman’s Landing books online and says posted prices include a 3.50% service charge. Fisherman’s Landing’s FAQ describes a paid gated lot (first 30 minutes free, then $5 for 0 to 2 hours, $10 for 2 to 4 hours and $15 for 4 to 24 hours) and free street parking on North Harbor Drive that “fills up fast in summer”; it suggests arriving an hour early. Parking at the other two landings was not confirmed.
Tackle Rental
H&M Landing and Point Loma Sportfishing both rent tackle; prices are on each landing’s page and are listed on the landing pages here. Fisherman’s Landing says tackle is an extra on most trips and tells guests to contact the business for prices.
Rules You Need to Know
Read the California fishing license and limits page before you book, and the Mexico waters and passports page for any trip that goes near Mexican land. CDFW’s multi-day permit page says trips longer than one calendar day need a permit held by the vessel owner or operator; that is the boat’s job, not the angler’s.
Fish Counts and Reports
A fish count is a dock-total tally of the fish landed by boats and anglers returning that day (this is our plain-words description; the landings do not define the term on the pages we read). Current counts and reports: Point Loma Sportfishing fish counts, Fisherman’s Landing fish reports, Fisherman’s Landing fish counts and H&M Landing’s On the Water reports.
The Three Landings
What We Could Not Verify
- Long-range prices (4 to 23 days) are not posted on the pages we read. Only each landing’s booking calendar or ticket office can confirm them.
- Office hours for all three landings, and parking at H&M Landing and Point Loma Sportfishing, are not confirmed.
- Passenger counts, speeds and boat specifications for Fisherman’s Landing and Point Loma Sportfishing long-range boats are not posted. Only the boat names are confirmed.
- Bluefin tuna, wahoo, dorado and albacore bag limits and seasons are not confirmed here. Check the current CDFW regulations.
- Whether bait, galley meals and lodging are included varies by boat and trip. It is not confirmed for H&M Landing, and only the Daily Double’s full galley is named for Point Loma Sportfishing. Ask the landing.
- Minimum ages for children and bunk (hot-bunk) etiquette are not stated on the pages we read.
- The tier descriptions come from the operators’ own pages, read through a page summarizer. Re-read the landing’s page for exact wording before you book.
- The prices in the table are one day’s posted listing and will have changed.
- Our preference for the Red Rooster III is the site’s own opinion, not confirmed or endorsed by the landing.
