Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park houses roughly three dozen artist studios and galleries around painted-tile courtyards. The center opened April 8, 1937, in buildings from the 1935 exposition. Its own website does not publish visiting hours or admission, so call or check before you go.Checked October 23, 2026.
What It Is
The cottages and courtyards were designed in the mid-1930s to look like a village in Spain for the 1935 California-Pacific International Exposition. After the fair, local artists turned them into workspaces. The center says it is a working artist colony and a public destination, with demonstrations and classes. Its About page says the colorful paving tiles and facade paintings date from the 1980s.
Visiting
The center’s site lists Events, Artists, About and Contact pages. It does not publish opening hours, admission or an address on the pages we read, so none are stated here. Individual studios keep their own schedules.
